Acknowledged as one of the world’s most renowned queen bee insemination authorities and instructors, Susan teaches courses designed to promote stock improvement, drawing students from throughout the world. She also has taught numerous classes abroad. Susan established and maintains the New World Carniolan (NWC) Closed Population Breeding Program, founded in 1982. The stock is widely recognized and has become an industry standard for beekeeping in the USA. The program focuses on selection for productivity and natural resistance to honey bee pests and diseases. A primary goal is to encourage, enhance and promote the development of scientific breeding programs. The NWC program serves as a working model of a scientifically based selection program for teaching purposes. Specialized courses and consulting services in queen rearing, instrumental insemination, bee breeding and related topics are offered nationally and internationally to promote stock improvement. She has published numerous articles in scientific and trade journals. |
Currently, Staff Research Associate at the UC, Davis Honey Bee Research Facility, Susan has a strong background in research and as well as commercial production. She worked at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, and the USDA Bee Breeding & Research Center in Baton Rouge, LA. She was a founding partner in Vaca Valley Apiaries in CA, a diverse beekeeping business devoted to honey bee stock improvement, providing production and breeder queens. She has also worked for several commercial beekeeping outfits in Florida, California and Montana. |
